Kruger Park from Cape Town: flights, days and malaria
Kruger Park from Cape Town is a flight, not a drive: the park lies in the far north-east. Here is how to get there, what malaria advice applies, and how to book your game drives.

Why Kruger is a different kind of safari
The reserves near Cape Town are private, fenced and measured in thousands of hectares. Kruger is on another scale. SANParks gives it as nearly 2 million hectares, established in 1898 to protect the wildlife of the South African Lowveld.2 It counts 147 mammal species, 507 birds, 114 reptiles, 34 amphibians, 49 fish and 336 tree species.5
That changes what a game drive feels like. Instead of a valley you can cross in an afternoon, you drive through bushveld that runs to the horizon, past rest camps and waterholes, with no fence in sight. The park has 12 main rest camps, 5 bushveld camps, 2 bush lodges and 4 satellite camps.6 It is a place for several days, not a few hours.
For a traveller based in Cape Town, the question is therefore not which tour, but whether to add a separate leg to the trip. The Western Cape reserves are close, malaria-free and easy; Kruger is far, in a malaria area, and immense.73 Neither is better in every way. This page covers how the Kruger leg works, so you can decide with the facts in hand.

The flights SANParks lists
Kruger is in the far north-east of the country, so flying is the practical way in from Cape Town. SANParks lists daily flights from Cape Town to Skukuza Airport, daily flights from Cape Town to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, and a flight from Cape Town to Hoedspruit.1 Book the flight first and plan the rest around the airport you land at, because the park is so large that the wrong gate can cost you half a day.
Each airport suits a different part of the park. Skukuza has car hire at the camp itself, so you can land and be on the roads quickly.10 Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport is the other daily option from the Cape, and a private shuttle from there to the park takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.18 Hoedspruit is where the tour this page recommends picks up its guests.
Driving the whole way is possible but long. Many Kruger visitors drive themselves inside the park, and many international visitors fly to the edge of the park and hire a car there.11 SANParks lists car hire at the Kruger Mpumalanga, Hoedspruit and Phalaborwa airports and at Skukuza camp.10 The road trip from the Cape is a holiday in its own right, best saved for when you have weeks rather than days.

Kruger, or stay in the Cape?
Answer honestly and the choice makes itself
The Kruger is one of the two South African National Parks that are situated in malaria risk areas. The other park is Mapungubwe National Park.
Malaria: what the official advice says
This is the biggest practical difference from the Cape. SANParks says Kruger is one of two South African national parks in malaria risk areas, the other being Mapungubwe, and that the risk in both is usually low, even in summer.3 The highest risk period is between November and April.13 After an increase in diagnoses, SANParks advises all travellers to take chemoprophylaxis while visiting, chosen with a doctor.4
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists Kruger National Park among South Africa's malaria transmission areas, along the borders with Mozambique and Zimbabwe, and recommends prescription medicine for travellers to certain areas.1415 Talk to a travel doctor well before you go, because some medicines start days before the trip. Ask your doctor, too, how long to keep taking it after you leave the park.
Bite prevention matters whatever you take. Mosquitoes most often bite between dusk and dawn, so cover up in the evening, use repellent and keep screens closed.9 The reserves near Cape Town, by contrast, all state that they are malaria-free.7161718 If malaria tablets are a deal-breaker, for example on a family trip with very young children, that contrast may decide the whole question for you.

Game drives once you are there
Once you land, a guided day drive is the easiest way into the park. The tour this page recommends does not start in Cape Town: you first fly north, and SANParks lists a flight from Cape Town to Hoedspruit.1 It is a full-day shared Kruger safari from Hoedspruit: 10 hours in an open safari vehicle, with pickup from any hotel or address in Hoedspruit and a group of up to 9. It is rated 4.93 from 483 reviews on Viator and starts from $107. Bottled water is included; breakfast, lunch and the Hoedspruit conservation fee are not.
Its guide speaks English, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund. On the southern side, a similar 10-hour day from Hazyview enters at Phabeni Gate, with pickup before sunrise, around 5:00 AM from October to March and 5:30 AM from April to September. It is rated 4.75 from 244 reviews, from $84, and runs in rain or shine.
Self-drivers set their own pace. Kruger's speed limits are 50 km/h on tar, 40 km/h on gravel and 20 km/h in rest camps, and SANParks recommends about 30 km/h on tourist roads for safety and game viewing.19 A guided day and a few self-drive days make a good mix: the guide teaches you what to look for, then you look on your own. Pack a cool box, start at gate opening, and stop often: the best sightings come to those who wait.
Packaged Kruger safari from Cape Town
A few operators sell the whole thing as a package. One 3-day Kruger safari from Cape Town lists pickup in the city, a 2-hour flight to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport, 1.5 hours by car, game drives in the park on each day with two nights at a guest lodge, and a flight home from Johannesburg.
That 3-day package starts from $1,846 and is rated 4.11 from 11 reviews; a 2-day version starts from $1,480 with 7 reviews. The small number of reviews is worth weighing. Booking the flight yourself and a well-reviewed day safari at the park is often simpler to compare and to change.
Whichever way you go, give it time. SANParks' own table of travel times between camps and gates runs up to 03:30 hours for a single leg, and a single day in the park, after a morning flight, leaves little room for the long, patient drives that make Kruger special.20 With several nights you can join a guided day, drive yourself and still sit quietly at a waterhole.
Kruger or the reserves near Cape Town?
Pick the Cape reserves when time is short, when toddlers are coming along, or when malaria medicine is something you would rather skip. The nearest Big Five reserve gives its distance as about 175 km from the city, and the site tour gets you there and back in a day with lunch and a game drive.12 You will see big animals, eat well and sleep in your own bed.
Choose Kruger if the safari is the heart of your trip, if you want a sense of true wilderness, or if a leopard matters to you. On the Cape reserves leopards are rarely seen, and on the Western Cape tours they are called highly unlikely.21 Kruger, with 147 mammal species across nearly 2 million hectares, simply gives you more ground and more time.52
One good plan is to do both: a day in the Karoo from Cape Town to see what a game drive is like, and then a few nights in Kruger later in the trip. If you do, fly into the airport nearest your lodge, book a guided day first, and keep repellent in your bag for the evenings.

You ask,we answer.
Can you drive from the Cape to Kruger?
Yes, but it is very long. Many international visitors fly to the park's edge and hire a car, SANParks notes.11
Are there direct flights to Skukuza?
Yes, daily. SANParks lists daily flights from Cape Town to Skukuza Airport inside the park.1
Is Kruger a malaria area?
Yes. SANParks says the risk is usually low but advises chemoprophylaxis; risk peaks November to April.3134
How big is Kruger National Park?
Nearly 2 million hectares. SANParks gives nearly 2 million hectares for the park, which was set up in 1898 to protect the Lowveld's wildlife.2
What time do Kruger day tours start?
Before sunrise. The Hazyview day picks up around 5:00 AM from October to March and 5:30 AM from April to September.
How many days should I plan for Kruger?
More than one. With 12 main rest camps and nearly 2 million hectares, a single day barely starts the park.62
Can I cancel the Hoedspruit day safari?
Yes, up to 24 hours ahead. The Viator listing allows free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance for a full refund.
