In brief
Where the name comes from
The Big Five is not a zoological group but a hunters' list. The term comes from early African hunters, who used it for the five animals hardest and most dangerous to hunt on foot: the lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo.1 Size was never the test, which is why the hippo, big and dangerous as it is, never made the cut.5 The list was about risk in the chase.
Today the same name sells safaris. It has become shorthand for the animals most visitors hope to tick off, and every reserve within reach of Cape Town uses it in some form. The phrase is useful as a checklist and less useful as a measure of a good day: a calm herd of elephants at a waterhole can be the highlight even if the leopard never shows. Use it as a list of hopes, and let the rest of the day surprise you: zebras, giraffes and ostriches often steal the show.
There is a twist in the rhino. Traditionally only the black rhino counted as one of the five, but both the white and the black rhino are now placed on the list.6 Near Cape Town the white rhino is the one you are most likely to meet; Garden Route Game Lodge, for instance, names white rhino among the animals on its drives.7
Lion, elephant and buffalo up close
Lions are the animal most people talk about on the way home. A male weighs about 150 to 250 kg.8 On a game drive they are often found resting in the shade in the middle of the day, so the late afternoon slot, when they start to move, has an obvious appeal. The reserve near Touws River and Garden Route Game Lodge both list lions on their drives.17
Elephants are the easiest of the five to enjoy, because they are big, social and busy. The trunk of an African elephant contains around 40,000 muscles, which explains how it can pull up a shrub and pick up a pebble with equal care.9 Watching a family group feed is one of the slower pleasures of a Karoo drive.
The buffalo is the one many visitors underrate. Cape buffalo typically weigh 450 to 900 kg, and herds close ranks so tightly that they can fight off lions.1011 On a drive they often look like oversized cattle grazing in the scrub, but they deserve real respect. A buffalo staring straight at the vehicle is one of the most memorable moments of any Big Five safari from Cape Town.

Why the leopard is the hard one
If you see four of the five, you have done well. The reserve near Touws River says leopards are rarely seen and that camera traps have confirmed Cape leopards on its land.2 The record of the site tour repeats it: leopards are rarely seen by day. Other tour records are blunter still, calling a leopard sighting unlikely or highly unlikely on their drives.
The reasons are simple. Cape leopards are solitary, elusive and nocturnal, at home on rocky ground and in dense bush, exactly the terrain that hides them from a vehicle on a track.13 A daytime drive of a couple of hours gives you little chance against an animal built for not being seen. That is not a flaw in the reserves; it is the leopard. Patience helps, but it cannot change the odds much on a single afternoon drive.
So treat a leopard as a bonus, never as the point. Ask your ranger about tracks and camera-trap photos rather than expecting a sighting, and enjoy the rest of the list. If a leopard on a branch is the photo you came for, a longer stay in Kruger, which SANParks gives as home to 147 mammal species, gives you many more hours of searching.14

Which reserves near the city hold all five
Every Big Five game reserve near Cape Town is private and fenced, and each describes its animals in its own words. The reserve near Touws River says all five live there.1 Inverdoorn calls itself a Big 5 reserve and explains that its lions are kept in an enclosure separate from the free-roaming wildlife.1516 Sanbona says it offers a Big Five safari experience.17
Garden Route Game Lodge says it is home to the Big 5, and its game-drive pages name lion, elephant, white rhino, buffalo and cheetah.187 Further east, Addo Elephant National Park holds the Big Five and adds the southern right whale and great white shark to make what SANParks calls the Big 7.19 Addo is a flight or a long drive away, so it belongs to a longer trip.
The practical difference is distance. The reserve near Touws River gives about 175 km from the city, under 2 hours by road, while Sanbona and Garden Route Game Lodge are each 3.5 hours away.32018 For a Big Five day out, that distance makes the nearest reserve the obvious choice, and it is where both the site tour and the sunset drive this page recommends go.
The sunset drive this page recommends
The tour we recommend here is the sunset game drive to the reserve near Touws River. It is a 9-hour day with pickup from 6 points, among them Sea Point, Camps Bay, the V&A Waterfront and the city centre, and 3 hours at the reserve. Before the drive you get a welcome drink, tea, coffee and light snacks, then the open 4x4 truck heads out with a ranger.
It has 804 reviews, a rating of 4.54 and a guide score of 4.7, starts from $155, is free to cancel until 24 hours ahead, and lets you reserve now and pay later. Guides speak English and French, and the listing is marked wheelchair accessible. Be at your pickup point 10 minutes early.
The obvious alternative is the site tour, which swaps the late light for lunch: a buffet at the reserve, then a 2-hour drive, from $230. Another sunset safari goes to a reserve near Worcester, with a buffet and safari truck boarding between 16:00 and 18:30, from $151. All of them make for a long but full day.
Getting the most from a few hours on the drive
A game drive near Cape Town is typically 2 to 3 hours with a halfway stop, so the time goes quickly.21 Sit where you can see both sides, keep your camera ready rather than packed, and resist the urge to film everything. The best moments often come while you are simply watching: an elephant crossing the track, a lioness lifting her head.
Listen to the ranger. On reserves that do not collar their animals, rangers find them by knowing behaviour, plants and the time of day.22 Ask what they are looking for and why, and you will start to read the land yourself. Questions about how the reserve was restocked, or how the rhinos are protected, usually get the best stories of the day.
Dress for an open vehicle, not for the weather in the city. Even on a warm day the drive catches the wind, and in winter the reserve asks for a very warm jacket, a beanie and gloves.23 Bring sunscreen and a hat for summer, and binoculars if you own them. A small bag that fits on your lap beats a big one on the floor. Pack water too for the warm summer afternoons.

What are the Big Five animals?
Lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo. The name comes from early hunters, who listed the five animals hardest and most dangerous to hunt on foot.1
Can you see the Big Five near Cape Town?
Yes, in private reserves. The reserve near Touws River, which gives its distance as about 175 km from the city, says all five live there.13
Is a leopard sighting likely?
No, it is rare. Leopards are rarely seen; camera traps confirm Cape leopards on the reserve.2
Why is the hippo not one of the Big Five?
The list was about hunting. The term marked the animals hardest to hunt on foot, not the biggest or most dangerous to meet.1
How long does the sunset game drive day take?
About 9 hours. The day lasts 9 hours with 3 hours at the reserve and pickup from 6 points in Cape Town.
Which rhino will I see near Cape Town?
Usually the white rhino. Both white and black rhinos now count as Big Five; the Garden Route lodge lists white rhino on its drives.67
What happens if it rains on the day?
Check the listing's terms. Rain is rare at the Laingsburg station, at most 2 wet days a month; the sunset drive is free to cancel until 24 hours ahead.24
